Hotels#
Use a hotel, not an Airbnb. The latter exists in Japan, but is heavily regulated - they can only be rented out for less than 6 months per year, and even less depending on local laws. There are a lot of places that just try to fly under the radar, but if they get caught, you might be out of a reservation.
Ryokan (Traditional Inns)#
I suggest booking 1-2 nights at a ryokan somewhere in the middle of your trip, as a planned rest day. Don’t plan to do too much else while you’re there except exploring right around the local area. The inn itself is the attraction. They’re usually associated with a Kaiseki multi-course dinner, and some have an onsen as well. If it’s not a natural hot spring, they will probably still have a nice bath to use, either in-room, or a communal one (or both).
